Abstract
Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) often causes severe invasive infections; however, antitoxin drugs against PVL are scarcely available. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) possesses antitoxin activity. We previously showed that IVIg neutralized PVL cytotoxicity in human whole blood. However, studies comparing the PVL-neutralizing antibody titers obtained in response to administration of different formulations of IVIg and IVIg preparations differing in age of manufacture are still lacking. In this study, we measured the PVL-neutralizing antibody titers obtained following domestic and imported IVIg and Japanese IVIg formulations manufactured in 1990 to 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. We showed that all the IVIg preparations elicited strong PVL-neutralizing antibody responses, with no remarkable differences in the titers depending on the country of manufacture or the age of manufacture. Thus, our results suggest that IVIg is effective against infectious diseases caused by PVL, irrespective of the type of formulation used.
